Provincial Funding Coming to Wallaceburg’s Hospital

A provincial funding announcement is starting a new chapter for the Wallaceburg site of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton joined XS Mornings for a special sneak preview of today’s announcement, saying $7.3 million in funding will help to build a brand new power plant for the hospital.

“That new power plant is going to really be a big part of the redevelopment, (which will include) a 24-hour emergency department, five inpatient beds, a new ambulatory care including specialty clinics,” McNaughton says. “It’s the very foundation of what a new redevelopment of that site is going to look like.”

Just over 15 years ago, the hospital was at risk of being shut down, but thanks to the work of local health care advocates, including the former Save Our Sydenham committee, the Health Alliance and province have come to understand how important the facility is to the community.

In February, 2019, the province gave CKHA a $500,000 planning grant to start laying the groundwork for its redevelopment plans.

McNaughton power plant is expected to be finished by 2021, and the revitalization will ensure the hospital is here to serve generations of families to come.

This morning’s full announcement at 10 o’clock will be streamed live on the CKHA Media Facebook page.
