Officials with the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission have expanded water restrictions for customers in Wheatley and Tilbury.

Limited restrictions were put in place last week, but have since been ramped up to include all residential and commercial customers on the municipal water supply.

“With the current extra demand on the Wheatley water system, we are experiencing a critically low amount of water in our reservoirs and water towers,” said Director of Operations, Karen Burgess in a news release. “[We] are asking all customers to eliminate all outdoor water usage which would include lawn watering, washing cars and exterior buildings, filling pools or hot tubs and any type of outdoor construction.”

Officials say the quality of drinking water has not been affected.

Crews are working towards getting a temporary water treatment system in Wheatley up as running as repairs continue to the water treatment plant, which was damaged by fire in September, 2023. It’s hoped the plant will be back up and running by August.
