A major construction project aimed at improving traffic safety at an intersection between Tilbury and Chatham is expected to begin this fall.
Chatham-Kent Council will be asked on Monday to approve a $6.587 million tender for the multi-phased constriction of a roundabout at the intersection of Queens Line and Merlin Road.
The first phase of the project, which is expected to begin this fall, will include the realignment of Merlin Road and Queens Line. The second phase will include the rehabilitation of the Merlin Road bridge over Highway 401, with a planned start date in February 2025.
The final phase of the project will be the construction of the roundabout in spring 2025. This phase will include extended closures of Merlin Road, however, Queens Line will remain open for most of the work. A full closure of the intersection is anticipated near the end of the project, which is expected to occur in late spring 2025.
The project is scheduled to be completed by July 2025.
Council voted to move forward with initial project designs back in March 2022 after receiving a consultant’s report that recommended constructing a roundabout at the intersection to improve safety and provide better traffic operations.
If approved by council, the contract for the construction project will be awarded to Huron Construction, a division of Brennan Paving & Construction Ltd.
