Local students are getting a lesson on the dangers of drugs, with a fun twist.

Local first responders, community agencies, and school officials have teamed up for the annual Racing Against Drugs program, being held this week at Erickson Arena in Chatham.

Developed by the RCMP, the community‑based drug and alcohol awareness program uses remote control car races to deliver important safety and healthy‑living messages to youth.

Students rotate through interactive “pit stops” led by community partners, covering topics including drug and alcohol awareness, the dangers of smoking and vaping, personal and injury‑prevention safety, and healthy and mindful lifestyle choices. Each day wraps up with racing activities designed to promote teamwork, school pride, and positive decision‑making.

“This program allows us to engage students in a fun and memorable way while reinforcing critical safety and prevention messages,” said Amanda Wyatt, Chairperson of Racing Against Drugs, Chatham‑Kent Chapter, in a news release. “The support of our community partners helps ensure this important program continues for local students.”

Organizers say roughly 220 Grade 5 students from 33 schools across Chatham-Kent are taking part this week.

Participating agencies include the Chatham-Kent Police Service, Community Health Centre, Chatham-Kent EMS, Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue, Chatham-Kent Mental Health Table, Chatham-Kent Police Service, Chatham-Kent Ontario Health Team, Chatham-Kent Public Health, Lambton-Kent District School Board, Restorative Justice Chatham Kent, and St. Clair Catholic District School Board.
