Railing Against The CK Rail Line

Chatham councillor Doug Sulman is railing against Chatham-Kent’s railroad.

The municipality bought an abandoned 28 mile rail line that runs from Chatham to Wallaceburg in 2006, in a bid to spur economic development.

Nothing has come of the rail line and the municipality is trying to find a buyer. Sulman said nothing positive has come out it.

“It’s been 13 years,” Sulman says. “We’ve been spending $60,000 a year of taxpayers money to maintain the line that’s not going to be used by us and never was going to be used by us.”

Administration provided a quick report at Monday’s council meeting about their efforts in trying to unload the rail line.

It costs Chatham-Kent $60,000 annually for required track maintenance, utilities and property taxes.
