Record Turnout for Farm Safety Day

A pair of sisters are working on educating Chatham-Kent kids about safety on the farm.

The annual Farm Safety Day was held in Ridgetown yesterday, and organizer Cassi Brunsveld says it was their biggest year yet with 127 kids, the largest registration since she and her sister Angela took over the event three years ago.

“It had run for over 20 years, and then three years ago Angela, my sister, and I took it over because they were having trouble finding someone willing to take on that responsibility,” Brunsveld explains. “We decided it was something good to keep going in the community.

Brunsveld says a number of topics were covered, including fire and equipment safety.

“From each different station, they were able to do different activities, the majority of which were hands on, taking little tidbits from each section and applying that to being on the farm.”

Brunsveld says the experience extends beyond life on the farm as well, including covering issues like sun and railway safety.
