Municipal officials are trying to prevent greenhouse light from becoming a nuisance in Chatham-Kent.
Councillor Melissa Harrigan has asked administration to prepare a report on the subject of light emissions, including a summary of engagement with greenhouse operators, members of the public, and neighbouring communities.
The report is also expected to provide recommendations with options to proactively address any potential light nuisance from greenhouses in Chatham-Kent.
South Kent Councillor Trevor Thompson said he has had conversations with constituents about the colourful skies in Chatham-Kent.
“I know it can affect bird migration, quality of life for residents,” Thompson says, while noting that light, dust, and odour are out of the municipality’s jurisdiction and more of a provincial issue.
Leamington and Kingsville recently approved bylaws regarding greenhouse light nuisance.
The report is expected to come back to Chatham-Kent council no later than April 1st, 2021.
