Unauthorized ATV use along the CASO Trail continues to be an issue, according to a new report from Chatham-Kent administration.
Back in November, council approved Councillor John Wright’s motion for municipal staff to create a report addressing improper use and damage to the CASO Trail.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service has created a master incident number to track multiple complaints and incidents so they can be reviewed collectively to identify recurring locations, times and patterns.
Requests have also been made for additional CKPS patrols along the 32-kilometre stretch of trail, including bike patrols.
Traffic data collection devices were also installed at five locations along the trail, recording 151 ATV detections over seven days. The devices recorded a top speed of 69 kilometres an hour.
Entegrus has also installed a camera near Base Road to assist in documenting vandalism, unauthorized access and other trail-related concerns.
A report from municipal administration recommends continuing with a combination of signage, access controls, monitoring, targeted enforcement and public awareness. The available incident, patrol and monitoring information will be reviewed following the 2026 trail season to determine whether additional measures should be considered.
