The L.O. Stonehouse Pedestrian Bridge will be the subject of a report looking at ways to increase security on the Wallaceburg span.
At Monday night’s meeting, council members voted unanimously in favour of having administration prepare the report after the walking bridge was vandalized for the second time this year.
“I know every time that this happens and we’re calling in contractors last minute and trying to get it fixed,” said Councillor Carmen McGregor.
“We had WAMBO this past weekend, where we had probably 20,000 people in our community and people going over and across those bridges and boats coming into our community. It becomes a major issue in our community when these things happen right beforehand.”
McGregor’s original motion also called for administration to provide a cost assessment of the recent repairs to the bridge. The repairs have since been completed and cost approximately $20,000.
The report will outline options, costs and recommendations for enhanced security measures at the pedestrian bridge. Options could include improved surveillance, lighting, access controls and physical security enhancements.
Administrative officials say the report could come back to council as early as September.
