The municipality of Chatham-Kent is prepared to pay its fair share of the closure of a landfill near Bothwell.

The Limerick Landfill sits on the western edge of the Municipality of Southwest Middlesex, roughly seven kilometers from Bothwell.

Residents in Bothwell began using the dump from 1968, but shifted to curbside collection in 1997 ahead of amalgamation.

In 2018, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks ordered the 6.27-hectare landfill be closed, with full shutdown expected this coming June.

Chatham-Kent will be responsible for $361,240, payable to Southwest Middlesex this calendar year. A report to council tonight recommends the money be taken from the Recycling W-D-O Reserve.

A new cost-sharing agreement is also being recommended with the Municipality of Southwest Middlesex and the Village of Newbury to update each community’s contribution percentages and clarifies financial contributions to the closure and post-closure expenses.
