Owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles are being warned of an increase in thefts in the Chatham-Kent community.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service has issued a public advisory following a rise in vehicle thefts over the last four months, targeting the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota RAV4 models. The theft of several Lexus vehicles has been reported.
Many of the vehicles were stolen despite being locked and without using the owner’s key fob. Investigators believe the thieves are using advanced methods to gain entry to vehicles and start them.
Police added that similar incidents have also occurred in neighbouring jurisdictions, suggesting a broader trend across southwestern Ontario.
Residents who own a Toyota or Lexus are encouraged to always lock their vehicles, park in well-lit areas or in a garage, install tracking devices on the vehicle, install security cameras or motion-activated lighting, and consider additional anti‑theft devices such as steering wheel locks.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in their neighbourhood is urged to contact police at 519‑352‑1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1‑800‑222‑TIPS (8477).
