Provincial Police are concerned with the number of risky drivers on the roads in southwestern Ontario.
Members of the OPP West Region conducted a safety campaign from June 15 to 21 with targeted enforcement and public education initiatives aimed at high-risk driving behaviours at intersections.
Authorities say there were 46 intersection-related collisions during the campaign, one of which resulted in a fatality, 15 collisions resulting in injuries, and 30 incidents of property damage.
In all, 354 charges were laid and 126 warnings issued, with offences including failing to stop at stop signs, failing to stop for red or amber lights, and failing to yield the right-of-way.
“The behaviours we continue to see at intersections are both concerning and preventable,” said Staff Sergeant Julie McLeod, West Region OPP Traffic Safety and Marine in a news release. “Every failure to stop, every missed observation, and every decision to rush through an intersection carries the potential for devastating consequences.”
Authorities say intersections remain the highest-risk environments on Ontario roadways. The OPP is reminding all motorist to come to a complete stop at stop signs, obey all traffic signals, and remain alert and focused at all times.
