One of the most recognizable seasonal fundraisers is well underway as the Salvation Army strives to support those in need across Chatham-Kent.
The Red Kettle campaign supports programs and services, including local thrift stores and food banks, and Captain Stephen Holland says the need is greater than ever.
“We’re down about $110,000 in our donations, that affects what we can do throughout the year through our food banks,” Holland explains. “Generally our food is purchased through local grocery stores, so we need that money to make sure our food banks are full.”
Due to a lack of volunteers, the number of Red Kettles out in the community is down from previous years. For example, Wallaceburg, donations are being accepted at No Frills and Walmart, whereas two years ago there were five kettle locations.
“More people in Wallaceburg are looking for toys and food than in Chatham. We’re looking for baby toys right now, we don’t have a lot of those.”
All kettles are equipped with debit tap machines, offering $5, $10, and $20 donation options.
The annual Childs Family Salvation Army family luncheon is set for December 20th at the Black Goose on James Street.
The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign runs through the end of the year.
