Seat Belts Save Lives

Provincial Police will be cracking down on unsafe drivers.

The OPP’s annual fall seat belt campaign is underway.

Constable Jay Denorer says those not properly restrained in a vehicle can face a $240 fine and a pair of demerit points.

“If we take last year, for example, 45 people that died in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads as a result of not wearing their seat belt,” Denorer says. “You get into a collision, whether it be just a normal traffic collision or if you go into a roll-over collision, you could be ejected from the vehicle if you’re not wearing your seat belt.”

Authorities are also reminding drivers that they are responsible for making sure all passengers under the age of 16 are properly buckled up, or in a car seat or booster.
