The clock is ticking for a set of temporary traffic lights in Wallaceburg.

The lights were put up at the intersection of Murray and Reaume last February to help deal with increased traffic because of the Lord Selkirk Bridge closure.

Some in the community have expressed concerns about students crossing the busy intersection.

However Krystal Gyuricza, who spearheaded the charge to have a pedestrian activated light installed back in 2017, says any grassroots efforts this time around needs more support.

“It’s a lot of work and a lot of people like to say they want to do things, but then nobody really steps up,” Gyuricza says.

Gyuricza has asked the municipality about putting in other safety measures, including installing a speed radar and extending the 40 km/hr community safety zone, but says nothing’s been done.

Municipal officials say the contractor working on the Lord Selkirk Bridge is just tying up some loose ends right now. The final piece of the project is removing  the lights, which is expected to happen in the next week or so.

Director of Engineering & Transportation, Chris Thibert, says any decision to install permanent lights would be up to Chatham-Kent Council, and the pedestrian crossing will have been reactivated before their next meeting in January.
