An arrest has been made after a shoplifter stole from the same Chatham business twice in one day.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said a man entered a store on Wellington Street West shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday and concealed several pieces of merchandise. When staff asked the man to leave the business, he initially refused but later left without paying for the concealed items.

The man returned to the store later that day at around 6 p.m. and again made off with several items without paying.

Police were called to the scene, and officers identified a suspect after reviewing video surveillance footage from the store. Authorities said the suspect was also breaching his court-ordered conditions by attending the store.

Officers located and arrested the suspect on Princess Street North a short time later. The 29-year-old Chatham man is now charged with two counts of theft, two counts of possession of stolen property, two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, failing to comply with a probation order, and failing to leave a premises when directed.

He was taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
