SIU Clears CK Officers

The province’s police watchdog says no charges will be laid against a Chatham-Kent officer in connection to an arrest in 2017.

The SIU was called in to investigate after a 34-year-old man suffered a broken nose while being taken into custody following a domestic dispute.

Investigators say the accused was resisting arrest and was taken to the ground, hitting his face on the patio stones. The suspect was then taken to hospital for treatment.

According to SIU Director Tony Loparco, there were no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against any of the officers involved, saying the amount of force used was justified under the circumstances.

“Where it had already been alleged that the Complainant had torn a door off its hinges and thrown it at his girlfriend,” Loparco says in his report, “it was a real possibility that he was capable of injuring one of the officers, if not subdued.”
