SIU Ends Investigation Into Man’s Medical Incident

The province’s police oversight agency has ended an investigation into a medical incident involving a suspect who was in the custody of the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

The Special Investigations Unit said a 34-year-old man was arrested on November 26, 2025, in connection with a drug trafficking investigation. A search of the man at the scene turned up a quantity of crack cocaine and fentanyl.

A warrant was also executed at the man’s home.

The suspect was taken to police headquarters and searched again before being lodged in a holding cell. While in the cell, the man began to vomit and was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with opioid withdrawal.

Because the man suffered a medical incident while in police custody, the SIU was required to investigate.

The SIU has since determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence during these events. As a result, the investigation has been terminated.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency in Ontario that investigates any incident involving police that has resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm, or allegations of sexual assault.
