The province’s police oversight agency is investigating after a Leamington man accused of weapon offences was injured during an arrest in Belle River.
The Ontario Provincial Police said officers responded to a call about an individual with a weapon on July 3 at around 7 p.m.
Authorities have provided few details about the incident but said a 21-year-old man from Leamington was located by officers and then taken to hospital for medical assessment for a reported injury.
On Monday, the man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, three counts of unlawfully being in a dwelling, mischief under $5,000, assaulting a peace office with a weapon, disarming a peace officer, assault with a weapon, careless use of a weapon, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammo, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting a peace officer, robbery with intent, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.
The man remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
The OPP said it has notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injuries, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
