St. Angela Merici Students Earn a Spot in National Playlist

A group of students from a local elementary school are getting national recognition.

St. Angela Merici Catholic School’s performance of Nikamo, in the Cree language, has been selected to be included in the CBC’s MusiCounts Passion Playlist for 2022.

“The first time we all came together to sing the Cree lullaby Nikamo, was on September 30, which was perfect for our observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,” says Music Teacher Jacquelyn McGlynn.  “Since then, we love to sing the song, translating the Cree language and thinking about the meaningful lyrics!”

The St. Angela Merici submission included 583 student singers, accompanied by Grade 7 and 8 students on keyboard, autoharp, guitar, Indigenous drum and steel tongue drums.  A group of intermediate students led the vocals.

One school from the CBC playlist will be chosen to receive $5,000 in new musical instruments.
