A local fire department is working to reduce deaths related to carbon monoxide.

The St. Clair Township Fire Department recently received a donation of 186 combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors through Safe Community Project Zero–a public education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.

The project is being made possible thanks to a $450,000 donation from Enbridge Gas. Province-wide, the campaign will provide more than 14,200 alarms to residents in 75 communities.

Officials say when properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure.

“Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are the first line of defence for families in our community,” says Richard Boyes, Fire Chief of St. Clair Township Fire Department in a news release. “Programs like Safe Community Project Zero strengthen partnerships that help keep our residents safe and reduce preventable tragedies.”
