Stay Off the Bridge!

Closed signs and fences don’t seem to be enough when it comes to construction on Chatham’s Fifth Street Bridge. fifth-street-bridge

Director of Engineering Adam Sullo says pedestrians have been tampering with the site.

“We’ve had a lot of trespassing since the road has been closed,” Sullo says. “People have taken it upon themselves to move fencing, they moved it several times over the weekend.”

Over the last week some bolts have been cut on access hatches, along with a Bell maintenance hole cover that was removed and not replaced, which is extremely dangerous.

Sullo says it became what he calls a “monkey see, monkey do” situation with more people crossing once they’d seen someone else do it.

“We want people to be aware it’s an active construction site, if you are entering it’s considered trespassing.”

The Engineering Department is reminding area residents that the site is off-limits and will remain so until construction is completed.

The span is slated to be demolished next week.
