A local service club has taken to the streets of Chatham-Kent in an effort to raise awareness about the violence and abuse women face around the world.
The Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent held a demonstration at the Parry Bridge on Keil Drive in Chatham on Thursday to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence towards Women.
Dozens of community members marched across the bridge over the noon hour, carrying signs and wearing orange in solidarity with millions of women who have suffered the effects of sexual assault, spousal abuse, human trafficking, rape, female circumcision, and other crimes.
According to information provided by the Zonta Club, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days.
Hilary Henley, advocacy chair for the Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent, said she is hopeful those who passed by were reminded of these important issues.
“I want them to stop and think about what it is we’re talking about here and to really give thought to aspects of women’s lives and the challenges they [face],” she said. “We want people to be conscious that we don’t live in a world where opportunities are equal and maybe it will change some guy’s behaviour.”
Ongoing construction prevented the local group from gathering on the 3rd Street Bridge in Chatham, where the demonstration has been held since 2013.
The Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent has been actively promoting equality for women for over 70 years.
