A Chatham teen is facing trafficking charges after he was allegedly caught carrying a bag full of drugs and cash.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers attended a motel on Grand Avenue East in Chatham on Monday shortly before 1 a.m. as part of a separate investigation, when they saw a teenager leaving one of the units carrying a bag.

When they approached, the teen took off running and attempted to discard the bag behind a vehicle. However, the officers caught up to him and took him into custody.

Police searched the bag and discovered around $20,000 in Canadian currency, 600 grams of suspected cocaine, and 34 grams of suspected fentanyl.

A 19-year-old Chatham man is now charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was later released with a May court date.
