A Plympton-Wyoming teen is facing charges after threatening graffiti prompted police and educators to temporarily shut down a Petrolia high school.
The Ontario Provincial Police said the 16-year-old was arrested Monday evening after the threatening message was discovered on Thursday in a bathroom at Lambton Central Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCCVI). The teen has been charged with uttering threats and mischief.
“The OPP recognizes the importance of school safety and how a threat of this nature can be difficult for all who are affected. The OPP takes these incidents very seriously and will continue to work closely with the school boards to help identify the individuals responsible when these investigations arise,” the OPP said in a news release. “Criminal charges will be laid when suspects are identified in these matters.”
In consultation with the OPP, the Lambton Kent District School Board made the decision to close the school for in-person classes on Friday. Students and staff returned to the school on Monday.
The 16-year-old suspect has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
