Testing, Monitoring, and Support Continues in Wheatley

Work continues to find the source of gas that caused the August 26th explosion in downtown Wheatley.

Thomas Kelly, Chatham-Kent’s General Manager of Infrastructure & Engineering says six 10-ft holes have been cored in area of the explosion.

Gas testing and monitoring taking place, and Kelly says data collected will be used to determine next steps.

Meantime, a resource centre for residents remains open at 108 Talbot Road East, with employment and social service staff available Monday through Friday. The centre also houses the Wheatley food bank on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and the library Tuesday through Thursday and Saturdays.

Housing services are still being provided to a number of families and individuals. “There may be residents who had temporary accommodations when the evacuation took place but whose circumstances have changed,” Chatham-Kent’s General Manager of Community Human Services, April Rietdyk says. “We want residents to know we’re still here to help.”

Case managers are also able to help evacuated residents to get winter coats and other clothing as the cooler weather moves in.

Evacuees may also call 519-351-8573 Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm and ask to speak with a Wheatley Crisis Case Manager for assistance with housing, food, and other support services.
