More than 2,600 charges have been laid on provincial roads in the region following an annual road safety campaign over the Victoria Day long weekend.
The Ontario Provincial Police took part in Canada Road Safety Week from May 16 to May 22, targeting the four main factors that contribute to road deaths and serious injuries — impaired driving, aggressive driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and distracted/inattentive driving.
During the six-day campaign, officers from the 13 OPP detachments in the West Region laid 1,552 charges for speeding, 60 for impaired driving, 94 for not wearing a seatbelt, and 22 for distracted driving.
More than 2,400 charges were laid during the campaign in 2022.
