Thunderhawks Keeping Hope Alive

The playoffs might be out of reach for the Wallaceburg Thunderhawks once again this year—they haven’t made the playoffs the past eight years, but things are trending upwards for the Junior C hockey team.

They earned their fourth win of the season on Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Dresden Junior Kings.

Assistant Coach Matt Clark says with nine games remaining, the Thunderhawks will try and make up ground in their push for a playoff run.

“I think playoffs are on your mind 100 percent until the day where you’re mathematically eliminated,” Clark says. “As far as we know, right now we still have a chance and as long as we have a chance these guys in here will keep going hard just and try and get some wins.”

With Saturday’s win over Dresden, the team earned its fourth win of the season, which is their highest win total in the past five years.

The Thunderhawks also had a close 2-1 loss to Amherstburg on the road on Sunday night.

“I think this season has been an enormous step forward right from last year and the previous years. The kids are coming to practice, they’re working, they’re battling,” Clark says. “We have a group that’s going to be together for at least a couple more years. I think that will be huge when it comes to team chemistry, it builds and builds and builds. I think you’re looking at a huge team that can really come together in the next couple of years and really put something nice together.”

The Thunderhawks are 12 points behind Petrolia for the final playoff spot in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.
