Recruitment efforts are giving a boost to mental health care at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance

Two more doctors have been hired to join the staff in the Psychiatry department and will be working out of the outpatient mental health clinic at 240 Grand Avenue West in Chatham.

“We are so pleased to welcome Dr. Olusola Awoniyi and Dr. Thomas Ofuafor to CKHA and the community of Chatham-Kent,” said Dr. Pervez Faruqi, Chief of Staff, CKHA. “Their knowledge and expertise will enhance our delivery of high quality mental health and addictions care.”

Dr. Awoniyi spent her early career practicing in various settings in the United Kingdom. In 2018, she joined the St. Joseph’s Care Group in Thunder Bay, Ontario as a Staff Psychiatrist. Most recently, she held the role of Consultant Psychiatrist at the Timmins and District Hospital in Timmins, Ontario. She has a passion for geriatric psychiatry, and aims to provide endless opportunities to expand CK’s Geriatric Mental Health Outreach Team (GMHOT) and better serve CK’s aging population.

Dr. Thomas Ofuafor earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from The University of Lagos in Nigeria in 1998. After spending years practicing in Nigeria, Dr. Ofuafor moved to Ireland where he continued practicing for a number of years. In 2011, Dr. Ofuafor received a Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and in 2013, became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, United Kingdom. After several years in the United Kingdom, Dr. Ofuafor and his family moved to Saskatchewan where he has been a valued member of the psychiatry team since 2016.
