Several fraud charges have been laid after Chatham-Kent police arrested a man who has been in the country illegally for the last four years.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were contacted by a Wallaceburg bank on Tuesday just before 11:30 a.m., after a man attempted to open an account with suspected fraudulent documents.
After arriving at the bank, police confirmed that the documents were fraudulent and that the man had been living illegally in Canada since 2022. His nationality has not been released.
When officers attempted to arrest the man, he resisted, leading to a struggle with police.
A 33-year-old is now charged with four counts of uttering a forged document, three counts of possession of an identity document, forgery, fraud under $5,000, obstructing police and resisting arrest. The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
