Union Prepares for Slots to Move

The Slots at Dresden Raceway may not be in Dresden too much longer.

As part of a new three-year contract, recently accepted by employees at Gateway Casinos & Entertainment, Unifor Local 444 President James Stewart says there’s language to protect workers in that event.

“We know that the casino is likely to change locations in the next two years,” Stewart says. “They’re looking at a location in Chatham, so we secured zone language to make sure that if they in fact move the casino, our members will follow the casino to the new location.”

Stewart says the company is looking to expand, but at this point nothing has been finalized.

“I’ve heard the same rumours you have,” Stewart says. “As far as I know, they haven’t signed an agreement or lease or an offer to buy any property at this point, but they are keeping their options open and are looking at (moving) potentially some time in 2019.”

There are currently 50 Unifor members at the casino, including slot attendants and technicians, dealers, servers, and housekeeping staff, but Stewart says with a potential move, the number of staff is expected to grow.
