Chatham-Kent council approved changing the zoning of a house in Chatham to allow First Nation community gatherings and events to be held on the property.
A historic house at 485 King Street West, called the Bleak House, plans to become an urban indigenous hub, hosting events. The house is next door to Riverview Gardens long-term home.
In a deputation to council, owners Faith Hill and Ken Wright outlined their plans to create an indigenous hub at the house where they have recently completed renovations preserving the integrity of the historic property.
They said the work done at the property is to benefit everyone.
There was a motion to defer the zoning decision, as councillor Michael Bondy wanted a public meeting to be held so neighbours could find out more information about plans from the owners of the residence, but that motion failed.
Neighbours had concerns about parking, noise and traffic when events are held at the house.
Other submissions from neighbours in support of the zoning change, said the proposal is a healthy step forward for the neighbourhood and a positive step for indigenous reconciliation in Chatham-Kent.
