Volunteers, Businesses Rally Support For Youth Centre

Volunteers and local businesses have stepped up over the last year to help the Dresden Sidestreets Youth Centre out of an unfortunate situation.

After renting the upper floor of the centre’s Main Street building for storage for several years, a long-term tenant left behind all kinds of items that were packed to the ceiling in both apartment units.

However, a team of volunteers leapt into action and have been working diligently over the past year and a half to clean up the space.

“The Youth Centre building has been an important hub for the community over the years so the building means a lot to us,” said volunteer Corey North in a news release. “Helping to clean it out is our way of making sure the Youth Centre can continue to provide programming for local youth.”

Multiple area businesses also volunteered to help demolish the upper apartment units by providing labour, materials or a combination of both.

Demolition was completed this past weekend and a new roof will be installed later this month thanks to funding from Chatham-Kent Community Foundation and the South Kent Wind Community Fund.

The Dresden Sidestreets Youth Centre is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to serving youth aged 10-17 from Dresden and surrounding rural communities.
