Walking to End Violence Against Women

Despite a wet afternoon, organizers are thrilled with yesterday’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser.

CK Women’s Centre Executive Director Karen Hunter says about 50 or so people turned out for the event, held at the Downtown Chatham Centre.

“It’s always great to have this many people, men, women, children, come out to this type of event,” Hunter says.”It’s a wonderful connection with the community, everyone’s out to not only become more aware of the services of the Chatham-Kent Women’s Services, but to end violence against women.”

The top fundraising team, the Christians in Action, brought in over $3000, bringing the group’s total over the last three years to more than $10,000.

Board president Terri Simmons says the money raised goes a long way.

“The Ministry (of Community and Social Services) funds us for 15 beds, we have 32,” Simmons explains. “Those other beds, we have to fundraise for ourselves. Last month we were definitely over-capacity, and we have consistently been over-capacity over those 15 beds we are funded for.”

No word yet on exactly how much money was raised overall, although it’s expected to be around the $10,000 mark.
