Wallaceburg Bridge Report Shelved For Now

A plan to look at potential changes to some of Wallaceburg’s bridges is being put on the back burner, for now.

The report to council suggested hiring a consultant to explore the idea of converting the Dundas Bridge and the Murray Street Bridge into fixed (non-movable) structures.

Ward Five Councillor Carmen McGregor asked for the report to be sent back to administration, saying she’d like to see it put off until the secondary plan for Wallaceburg’s south side is completed.

“I think with our future study coming up, including the basin in Wallaceburg and the waterways, it just makes sense the study of these bridges, which I know needs to happen, but that it happen after we’ve decided how we want the south side of Wallaceburg and the basin to look going forward.”

McGregor says councillors just received infrastructure reports on the Murray and Dundas Street bridges this past Friday, both of which are over 150 pages long, and haven’t had time to read through them.

Converting the Murray Street and Dundas bridges to fixed structures would prevent larger boats from passing down the river, but would save the municipality about $1.1 million in ongoing maintenance costs.
