A reminder to area residents to avoid local waterways after last week’s rain.

Officials with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority say the local watershed received between 35 and 80 mm of rain, with runoff elevating rivers and streams.

Although peak flows moved through the region yesterday, officials say the area could see another 5-10mm late Thursday and into Friday, keeping water levels high. Ponding, standing water, and localized flooding can be expected in natural floodplains and low lying areas.

Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift-moving water. Children and pets should also be kept away from the water.
