‘We Cannot Let Our Guard Down’ In Wheatley, Says Fire Chief

The release of combustible gas last week in Wheatley is a reminder that the situation that led to an explosion over the summer is not fully resolved, said Chatham-Kent’s director of Public Works.

Public Works Director Ryan Brown said on Tuesday that officials are continuing to examine data after the low-level combustible gas release was detected twice on Friday near the evacuation zone in downtown Wheatley. In both instances, the gas was effectively flared off and there was no danger to the public.

Brown said the incidents demonstrated the effectiveness of the safety procedures that have since been put in place, following the gas explosion on August 26 that destroyed one building and injured 20 people.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services also provided additional resources and air monitoring around the perimeter of the evacuation zone to ensure public safety.

“There are valid reasons why we have been on site non-stop since gas was detected last June,” said Fire Chief Chris Case in a news release. “Although there was no threat to public safety on the weekend, we cannot let our guard down. We will remain in place until such time as the situation is resolved.”

Earlier this month, the decision was made to reduce the size of the evacuation zone to allow some residents and businesses to return. As of Tuesday morning, electricity and water have been restored at 14 properties that were formerly part of the evacuation zone.

Initially, a total of 67 households and 44 business properties were evacuated following the explosion in August.
