Weighing the Impact of Bill 148

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is grappling with the impacts of a potential passing of Bill 148.

CAO Don Shropshire says the provincial legislation isn’t just about the minimum wage.

“The baseline information that the budget’s going to increase the minimum wage, that’s fairly straight forward,” Shropshire says. “But the bill that’s related to it, Bill 148, has a number of other components to it, as an example it changes the number of hours people can work as a minimum before they can be considered full time.”

Shropshire says municipal staff are pouring over all of the potential impacts of the legislation, with a final analysis in time for next year’s budget process.

Bill 148 has faced stiff opposition from business owners who say the wage increases and other terms will cause undue hardships.
