Well Testing Continues In Wheatley

Remediation efforts in Wheatley have been delayed as additional well testing is conducted at the site of last summer’s gas explosion.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said work was initially expected to resume on Friday, but has since been pushed to next week as contractors examine how best to cap the well.

Municipal officials said more time is needed to allow for additional well testing.

Work was initially stalled at the site after a gas release was detected on July 6. The two-hour release measured at 24 parts per billion in the atmosphere, which is less than one-hundredth of the amount considered a safety hazard. Some smell was noticeable at the site.

When work resumes, residents may detect an odour of gas. If this happens, residents are asked to immediately call 911.
