It’s been almost 23 weeks since hydrogen sulfide was first detected in Wheatley, and the cost of Chatham-Kent’s emergency response continues to mount.

The municipality has incurred an estimated $2.5 million in various expenses since a state of emergency was declared in downtown Wheatley earlier this year. The state of emergency was due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas that was detected.

The estimated number comes from a report from Chatham-Kent administration that will be presented to council tonight.

Chatham-Kent continues to have discussions with the province for costs incurred. So far the province hasn’t provided any funds to Chatham-Kent for Wheatley emergency expenses.
