Environment Canada has extended its special weather statement for the region with strong winds expected to continue throughout the day.

Erie Shores flooding. May 2nd 1017.

Officials say gusts will hit 80 kilometres an hour, easing off early tomorrow morning.

Meantime, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority says the Lake Erie shoreline is in for significant flooding.

“Winds are expected to reach the point where we’ve seen flooding in the past, and expected not to ease up until Wednesday at noon,” Spokesman Jason Wintermute says. “We’ll have two full nights where winds will be at the pint where they could be causing flooding with no real reprieve.”

He says high water levels and typical fall weather are also contributing factors when it comes to major flooding events near the lake.

“Because the lake is higher, the same height of wave starts that much higher and can get on shore that much easier,” Wintermute explains. “There’s also the seasonal effect here as well, we’re getting into fall and it’s more gusty.”

According to Environment Canada, the wind is expected to start easing off late Wednesday morning.
