What had been a special weather statement has now been upgraded to a winter storm warning as the first storm of the season moves into the region.

Environment Canada is calling for wind gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour and between 5 to 15 cm of snow by Friday night.

The storm will begin as rain or snow late this afternoon. As temperatures drop early tomorrow morning, officials warn of a potential flash freeze mixed with damaging winds and heavy snow at times.

Wind chill values are expected to be into the minus 20s.

Area residents are urged to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca.
