The local branch of the YMCA has launched its yearly campaign in support of those needing a helping hand.
The Chatham-Kent YMCA has launched its 2026 Annual Shine On Campaign by announcing a fundraising goal of $150,000.
During an event at the YMCA in Chatham on May 6, several initial donations were announced from local organizations, including $5,000 from Waste Connections of Canada/Ridge Landfill Trust and $14,000 from TekSavvy Solutions Inc.
All funds donated to the campaign go towards the financial assistance program at the YMCA, to help those experiencing financial barriers have access to local programs and services.
Local campaign chair Jim Loyer said the program is about providing “a hand up rather than a hand out.”
“The staff here will come up with an amount that’s affordable for the person who is wanting to join us, not the whole fee, but enough so that they have a vested interest,” he said.
Last year, the YMCA financial assistance program supported 635 members in Chatham-Kent with more than $125,000 in aid.
“Here in Chatham, approximately one-third of the people who are members here… gets financial help from us,” said Loyer.
