The cold weather has caused a surge in visits to Chatham’s Hope Haven.

Director Joe Simpson says their overnight service has only been open for 3 weeks.

“We began overnight service on November 20th. Since then it’s gone from 2-4 per night, and the last two nights we’ve been filled to capacity at our 10-bed facility”, says Simpson.

Simpson says they’ve been accepting guests from the London area, where the shelter is full.

“Apparently the mission in London is full. A couple of our guests this week have come to us because they’ve been turned down in London. We’re full right now, but we’ll figure something out. No one is sent back into the cold”, Simpson says.

Simpson says Hope Haven relies solely on the generosity of the community.
