A Thamesville resident spotted something unusual on Highway 21 this morning.

Terry Acs says she doesn’t think it was a fox or a cat.

“I was driving to work this morning, and just before I got to Dawn Mills Road, a cougar passed right in front of me, went across the road into the field beside the greenhouses,” says Acs.

Jolanta Kowalski, spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources, says it likely was a different kind of animal.

“Cougar sightings come up sporadically in different parts of the province. It’s highly unlikely that individual saw a cougar. Most of the time, I’d say 99% of the time, any kind of alleged cougar sighting turns out to be misidentification. It’s quite amazing what some of the animals are mistaken for,” says Kowalski.

Kowalski says if you do come across a suspected cougar, to keep your distance and safely take a photo, if you can, so the Ministry can identify it. She says photos of tracks are also helpful.
