The issue of an over stressed ambulance service will go before Chatham-Kent council tonight, and there is a call for increased staffing to debate.

Service Provider Medavie’s Chatham-Kent general manager, Donald McLellan, says concerns over a lack of service have prompted them to ask for more money.

“Administration and ourselves are recommending an additional 12 hours to our system to try and improve the impact on our system’s delivery and improve our overall performance as a delivery service.”

McLellan says growing demand for paramedics is a common theme in all of its service areas.

“This is not a new and unique thing to Chatham-Kent with how the demand is growing year over year, we’re trying to be as effective as possible with our resources.”

The proposed increase locally would mean additional staffing from 2pm-2am, at a cost of about $300,000 to the municipality for the rest of 2018.
