Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope hosted the federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities as they toured the site of the former Navistar plant on Richmond Street in Chatham Monday afternoon.

The mayor is seeking federal and provincial contributions for a multi-use recreation complex and transportation hub on the site with an estimated cost of between $52 and $56 million.

Hope says it was a positive meeting, but nothing concrete was decided.

“I wasn’t expecting someone to say ‘Hey, we’ve got money,'” Hope explains. “I’m expecting them to say ‘Yes, I get where you’re going,’ and when they release the money for people to put applications in, they’re going to have an understanding of what Chatham-Kent’s proposal is all about.”

The mayor says the meeting was to give the minister a working knowledge of the site.
