Last year marked the highest number of motorcyclist deaths on OPP-patrolled roads since 2017.

The Ontario Provincial Police said a total of 44 motorcycle riders lost their lives in collisions in 2022.

Failing to yield the right of way, excessive speed and inattentive driving are among the leading contributing factors to motorcycle fatalities, authorities said.

Motorcyclists were at fault in 61 per cent of the fatal collisions, while drivers of other vehicles were at fault in 39 per cent of the deaths.

In the past 10 years, 51 per cent of motorcyclists killed in collisions on provincial roads were between the ages of 45-64.

Authorities are reminding motorcyclists to wear bright, protective equipment and clothing to increase their visibility to other motorists.
