Today marks the start of Emergency Preparedness Week, and with flood waters affecting almost every community in the province, we have some tips to help keep you and your family safe.

There are a number of things to keep in mind to prepare for an emergency, including having a home escape plan, putting together an emergency kit, and making plans for family members and pets should you have to leave at a moment’s notice.

In the event of a power outage, make sure you have candles or battery-operated light sources, and turn off any appliances or electronics to prevent a surge when the lights come back on.

And with the risk of flooding for those who live near local waterways, keep important documents high and dry, put weather protection sealant around basement windows and the base of ground-level doors, and if you have to leave your home, turn off basement furnaces and outside gas valves.
