Standard Time Returns

It’s that time of year once again – we fall back this weekend.

Clocks go back one hour early Sunday morning, marking the return to Standard Time.

Chatham-Kent Fire public educator Whitney Burk says it’s a great time to change batteries for the smoke detectors.

Burk says alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries changed every 6 months, and that alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.

Meantime, figures show the end of Daylight Savings Time actually triggers a rise in the number of crashes on the road.

According to a recent insurance industry survey, 30% of drivers overcompensate for the extra hour of sleep by staying up later, and losing any potential benefit the time change may allow.

Researchers say that while 24% of drivers feel more alert the day after the time change, 19% actually feel worse-off.

Experts say regardless of the time change, try to keep your sleep cycle as regular as possible, and don’t assume you – or other drivers – will be more alert on the roads this morning.
